Screenshot 01 - I began working on tracing out a strut cycle, and creating my main character, the lion

Screenshot 02 - A full shot of my entire cycle, adding the last 2-3 frames on my own, following the pattern of course

Screenshot 03 - After importing my Illustrator files into Flash, I began to create symbols for the character, which make him come to life and walk on the spot

Screenshot 04 - Some progress of my work in Flash, adding other characters, and background to make the animation complete

I struggled with this assignment for many different reasons, firstly - I have no experience in Flash prior to my DMA101 class last semester where we made a simple walk cycle.  Secondly, I forgot to keep in mind the timing and positioning of the character.  Third, I own an older version of Flash (CS4), therefore, when bringing my work to and from school and home, I’d loose alot of files and was unable to open mostly. Lastly, to top it all over - my laptop (YES A PC…) decided to grab a virus.  Luckily I was able to restore my computer without loosing my work. Main lessons I’ve learned from this assignment is time management and hard drives are your best friend.  Make time for assignments I’m having difficulty with and ask for help.

All in all, my assignment could have been much more better with better planning and time management. Oh well…you live and you learn.

This is my final for our skate deck assignment.  The main theme was “predators”.  I chose an elephant as my main predator because they are my favorite animal and also symbolize good luck.  They are the largest living land animals on Earth today and also a symbol of wisdom and famed for their memory and intelligence.

Using Illustrator I began tracing out a sketch of an elephant creating outlines and filling in the color.  At first I was hesitant about adding color because I love the look of sketches and outlines, just plain black and white.  But while keeping the idea of a skate deck in mind, they are usually bright and colorful that way they capture attention while in motion.  This is also why I added detail but did not over do it.

I added some vector made graphics (the flowers and designs in the middle) to add color and interest.  I chose a neutral color scheme, mainly dark.  At the center top I added my logo “stefari”.  The main idea behind this name is a nickname I was given and I thought it went perfectly while mindmapping for this project. While mindmapping ideas for predators, the elephant was connected to a “jungle”, which was connected to “safari”. I linked my “brand” to this.

This is my final for the Character Illustration assignment.  I chose a sketch of Spyro the dragon as my reference by Knightmere on Deviantart (Link).  I began with the outline of the sketch. Instead of using the stroke as the outline, I took time to create separate shapes that make up the outer black line.  That was probably the most time consuming part of this project.

After I had my outline (Screenshot 4), I began creating shapes to fill in all the empty white spaces.  Now, the main purpose of the assignment is to choose a light source for the character and add light and dark shadows on your work.  This was the most challenging thing yet in Illustrator.  I had some difficulty figuring out where the light would sit on my character.  One thing that helped me out a lot was using a lamp and a small object as practice to see where and how light actually hits an object.

Some useful tools I used during this process were Pathfinder (to hollow out some shapes for the outline), the Opacity meter (to create lighter and darker shades for the shadows), and the Swatches window (to keep all my custom colors together and saved).

Overall, I feel as if I spent too much time on the outline (even though it is awesome), and I’m going to force myself to become better at measuring and predicting shadows.

Adobe Illustrator & Adobe Photoshop

The Simplicity Principle

Technique #1 Consistency
The toolbar on Adobe programs Illustrator and Photoshop have a similar look. Rulers on the art board can be accessed the same way in the three programs. Hot keys for quick access to tools have the same commands that help familiarize users in all programs if they choose to transition to another Adobe program. Users can also drag and drop files from any of these programs into the other because the files are compatible and can be worked with between the programs.

Technique #Navigation between major user interface items is important
Each project open in the programs has its own individual tab across the top of the program window making transitions to other files easy. Different users can customize the interface of the program by hiding/showing different windows of their choice. This assists users from any walk of life. For example, an artist can save a specific colour set for their hand-made art piece; whereas a photo editor would use different functions to re-touch images of people or scenes.

Technique #3 Don’t create busy user interfaces
The different programs from Abode share similar interfaces which help the user become familiar with the layout.  The interface is customizable, easy to understand and work with. Adobe programs don’t require the user to think too much about how to use the program due to the easy-to-read language of the toolbars and terms.

This is my progress so far for the sports logo assignment.  I chose the Florida Panthers, because it was a bit challenging and I enjoy the colors and overall look of the logo. It started off easy, tracing and experimenting more with the pen tool.  When it came to tracing the mouth of the panther, the teeth have a slight curve to them which was a bit of a trick.  Once I mastered the shape I duplicated it and adjusted the size to make things go quicker.  Near the face, another issue which took me a while was using the pathfinder to cut out the whiskers on the right of the face.  Changing the color of the shape I was cutting helped alot.  I had some trouble with the pen tool and trying to master the shape of the nose and mouth, after a couple tries adjusting the handles, it is perfect. and After that it was all good.  Organizing my layers and making use of the large thumbnails helped out alot.  Overall I’m pretty pleased with the outcome, and I’m excited to print and mount it :) Enjoi!

My recreation of the lion logo via Illustrator

My recreation of the lion logo via Illustrator

A self-portrait tells a story about a person. It shows their interests and personality and it’s a first impression. After many attempts at trying to shoot the “right” photo that represents me, I finally found it. A couple things about my photo. Firstly the photo is shot in my favorite place, my bedroom. Second, it is shot from the back of me which represents how I usually come off when I first meet a person, very quiet and simple. I don’t like to reveal very much at first. Lastly, I am sitting in Lotus Position (yoga pose) which represents balance and stability. (Also shows my love for the art). I chose black and white because it reminds me of the original photography process and I’m much more pleased with the outcome. Enjoi!

Module 1 - Photoshop Design & Organization: Audi R8 Visual Prototype

For this assignment I tried to keep the design very simple and clean.  When I think of the Audi R8 I think of higher class performance and almost futuristic design.  My first layouts were looking to similar to the in-class tutorial so I edited the navigation bar and sidebar. I researched a few vehicle websites and found out that many (including the Audi) keep a large main image of the car nearing the top of the page to show off its design. Although it felt repetitive it seemed the most effective in that position.  Another feature of my layout is the video box in the sidebar.  It started off very amateur looking so I changed it too look more professional and appealing.  The only difficulty I had with this project was the text.  Maybe because of the sizing/zoom and me being new to Photoshop I couldn’t quite get it right, but I tried my best and I am pretty pleased with the outcome.

My drawing of The Mars Volta, using ink. Totally unfinished and whatnot, but whatever. Enjoi!

So basically my inspiration for one of the logos came from an old sketch I drew a while ago. It’s two faces put together to create a raindrop. I thought it was cute so I changed it up a bit to create something related to “Vanilla Twist”.  It might be difficult to see because I didn’t fill in the color, but the concept is there are two faces, but in the middle there is an ice-cream parfait/cup kinda thing.
